Review Twilight Land

Let me tell you about my experience with Howard Pyle's Twilight Land. Going in, I had a slightly misguided expectation. Knowing Pyle's reputation for children's fiction, and having a fondness for spooky tales, I envisioned a collection of charming ghost stories. While the book isn't exactly that, it's still a captivating read, albeit with some caveats. It’s more akin to a collection of fairy tales, imbued with a unique Pyle-esque twist – a touch of the quirky and the occult that gives them a subtle edge.

My main mission was to gather more of Pyle’s illustrated works – his illustrations are truly iconic. And Twilight Land certainly delivered on that front! It’s practically bursting with them; nearly every page features a black and white illustration. However, and this is a significant however, the presentation of these illustrations left much to be desired. They feel like they've been haphazardly dropped onto the pages – different sizes, seemingly cut and pasted from various sources, and oddly cropped. It’s a real shame, because the illustrations themselves are beautiful pieces of art, clearly worthy of being showcased better. The inconsistent formatting around these illustrations also made for a somewhat jarring reading experience. There are numerous typos and editing issues throughout, further detracting from the enjoyment.

Now, despite all these technical flaws with the edition I obtained (a low-cost paperback), I still found much to appreciate. The actual paper quality was good, the cover was crisp and new, and for under ten dollars, the rare nature of the illustrations almost made the imperfections worthwhile. I’m a sucker for a beautiful old book, even if it needs some TLC. The stories themselves, while not scary in a traditional ghost story sense, are wonderfully imaginative. They're filled with kings and magicians, heroic quests and moral lessons, all woven together with Pyle's characteristically elegant prose. The fables, told by a cast of familiar fairy tale characters gathered in an inn, create a charming and slightly surreal atmosphere. They’re not overly simplistic, either; they tackle complex themes of courage, justice, and the human condition with surprising depth.

The book is clearly a product of its time, and the moralistic and didactic tone might not appeal to all modern readers. It's not a quick, breezy read; it requires a little more patience and tolerance for the occasional imperfection. My recommendation? If you're a huge Pyle fan and prioritize possessing his artwork, then perhaps a slightly imperfect version is acceptable. But, if you're looking for a pristine, flawlessly edited reading experience, I'd strongly advise seeking out a different edition – perhaps one from a different publisher or even a digital version that might offer clearer text and a more curated approach to the illustrations. The stories themselves deserve to be enjoyed without the distractions of formatting and proofreading issues. Ultimately, I’m glad I own it for the artwork, but a better edition is definitely out there.
